Curious George: We have been reading a number of Curious George books over the past few weeks. We even read a biography of Margaret and Hans Rey the authors of the original Curious George books. The children have enjoyed sharing the adventures of George and the Man in the Yellow Hat. We saw a video of Curious George learning how to make maple syrup.

After reading about George, the children planned and wrote their own Curious George books. They finished them on Friday and they are on display in our classroom. We will share a few each day and then the children will bring them home to share with their families.

Maple Sugaring: Our visit to the Weston Sugar Shack was fun and informative. We also got to boil sap in the classroom and taste our very own Happy Hollow syrup. Of course starting with 14 cups of sap (That’s all that could fit in our steamer.) meant we only got a bit of syrup. The other first grade classrooms will be boiling as well. We should have enough for all the children to get a taste of syrup. We are also making a maple sugar mural in our classroom.

Pancake Breakfast: We will be having our traditional pancake breakfast on Thursday, March 29, 2018 in the cafeteria. More information about this event will be coming home shortly. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of the breakfast.

Math: We recently completed our unit on addition and subtraction to 20 and have begun our unit on place value. The children are building number with towers of ten and single ones to understand what the digits in the  ones and tens columns represent. We will be moving to adding tens to any number up to 120 and adding a single digit to a double-digit number.  We will also be introducing U.S. coins and their values. We will use our knowledge of tens and one to add coins. Sorting coins, discussing their names and value as well as playing games with coins at home are a great way to help you child get ready for this new math concept.

Fundations: We are moving along with our word work using the Fundations program. I am including a list of trick words that the children have been exposed to up through Unit 7. We will be adding new words as they are introduced throughout the units. Having your child read the list of trick words and practice spelling them is a great home activity that will enhance their reading and writing.
